Author Chat #3: Paul O'Neill

We discuss the challenges of traditional vs self publishing, writing processes, and the importance of horror in the modern world.

My guest in this episode is Paul O’Neill, the award winning author of It Calls From The Doors, and The Nightmare Tree. He also runs the excellent Short Story Club on SubStack.

We discuss the challenges of writing across different mediums, writing processes, advice for effective flash fiction, and the importance of horror in the modern world.

The Host:

Newton Webb is a British horror author with fourteen published books. His collected works, Tales of the Macabre Volumes 1–3, contain tales of temptation, dread, and the hidden evils lurking beneath everyday life.

Inspired by splatterpunk and classic gothic themes, his fiction frequently blends visceral horror with psychological tension, reflecting influences ranging from heavy metal to ancient mythology.

Outside his writing career, Newton co-chairs the UK Chapter of the Horror Writers Association.

The Guest:

Paul O’Neill is an award-winning short story writer from Fife, Scotland. As an Internal Communications professional, he fights the demon of corporate-speak on a daily basis.

His stories are set in fictional small towns in Scotland and focus on working class themes, addiction, family situations and more (plus the occasional monster or ghoul). His works have been published by the NoSleep podcast, Crystal Lake, Sinister Smile Press, Scare Street, Vanishing Point Magazine, Fifth Di Magazine, HellBound Books, Eerie River, Grinning Skull Press, and many other publications.
